Services
Using light to make architectural spaces tangible and experiential. We develop bespoke lighting concepts that place users and architecture at the center. Our services span all project phases—from concept design and planning to tendering and commissioning—ensuring that the vision developed with architects and clients is realized exactly as intended.
The exhibit, the visitors, and the exhibition itself are key players in a successful museum project. Through interdisciplinary collaboration with all relevant disciplines, we design both permanent and temporary exhibitions. Our focus is on the objects and the visitors, addressing the challenges of conservation and presentation through optimal lighting quality.
In daylight planning and consulting, the goal is to harness the best light quality the sun can offer for interior spaces. Daylight—and our connection to it—is essential for all forms of life. We follow the European daylight standard EN 17037. As always, the quality of the available light is what truly matters.
We advise clients, architects, designers, and users on how to optimally illuminate interior spaces using both daylight and artificial light, in line with the specific project requirements. We also offer independent second-opinion reviews, providing expert assessments of existing concepts and designs to ensure quality, feasibility, and alignment with project goals.
Tailored to the specific project requirements, we design in accordance with the relevant energy standards and certifications—such as EN 111, Minergie, LEED, and others. The goal is to implement lighting solutions that are used precisely where and when they are needed, ensuring optimal efficiency and performance.
We also offer our planning expertise in the field of private controlling. As authorized inspectors for private lighting compliance checks, we support projects from the planning phase through to the verification of statutory energy compliance.
At Gradation, collaboration is key. The team focuses on building lasting partnerships based on honesty and purpose, approaching every project with a fresh perspective and a commitment to excellence. By blending high-quality materials with forward-thinking technology, Gradation ensures every design is both visionary and enduring.

Lectures
The presentation explores the interplay between object conservation, light quality, and the visitor experience. Drawing on experience from lighting design for permanent exhibitions, it addresses key questions: Are established guidelines such as 50 lux still up to date? Or do we need new, scenographic approaches to better balance preservation, atmosphere, and perception?
Exhibition Lighting – Balancing Preservation, Presentation and Light Quality
Together with Richard Adler, Head of Collection, Conservation, and Restoration, Claude explores the impact of lighting in exhibition design. While lighting is essential for showcasing objects, it can also compromise their long-term preservation. Museums must therefore navigate a delicate balance between visibility and conservation—especially in permanent exhibitions, where objects are exposed to light over extended periods.
For the Interior Design degree program, Claude serves as an expert accompanying the module Light and Atmosphere.
Claude is guest lecturing at the department of Conservation and Restoration at the HKB in Bern. He is discussing the influence of lighting on delicate objects within the realms of museums and exhibitions. This is part of Giovanna die Pietro's BA course.
